“What they don’t teach you in beauty school” is that school is actually designed to assist you in taking and passing your state board exams, and that it is the beginning of a life long journey of education.

Momma said there’ll be days

You graduated at the top of your class, were voted most likely to succeed, and built a repeat clientele while at school. License in hand, you start on your career path, land your dream job, and are destined for greatness with in the beauty industry, right?

Not so fast, your first highlight has more brass in it than your local marching band, and the client is less than enthused with her new look. First things first. Don’t panic, swallow any ounce of pride you may have and admit your mistake. Since the clients satisfaction is top priority ask for help, don’t go this alone. Have the most experienced colorist in the salon help you correct your clients color.

Gage her temperament and if she is comfortable with you assisting go for it, if not reassure her that you are turning her over to someone with experience in color correction. Resist your urge to bolt, by staying put, taking notes, listening intently, and asking questions. Get over it, and get back in the game. Even the very best estheticians, hairdressers and nail technicians have made beauty blunders. It’s all apart of the learning process.

Wax On Wax Off

Anything worth having is worth working for or so they say. Your sights are set on being the spa’s lead esthetician, it’s all you think about. Expect before taking the plunge as the lead you may have to do a little following, throw in some sweeping, answering phones and scheduling other technicians appointments. This position may also have towel folding, and downtime associated with it too. Don’t be discouraged, be the very best sweeping, phone answering, scheduling, towel folding esthetcian around. It really does build character.

It’s kind of like the Original Karate kid, you know the one with Daniel’s mundane chores, that seemingly had nothing to do with Karate and everything thing with Mr. Miyagi getting his house cleaned. It is all relative and when the time is right you too will kick butt like Daniel-son did (well, not literally).

If I Knew Then…

Don’t expect it to be an easy road to travel, but you can have a very rewarding career as a member of the beauty industry. Remember to continue your education, learn from your mistakes, take pride in doing the jobs that no one else wants to, and most importantly have fun!

AVOID WAXING DISASTERS

A Florida resident was recently awarded $15,000 in a lawsuit, for a botched brazilian bikini wax. In which she claims her labia was torn, and had to receive six stitches to close the gaping wound. After I saw the story on the news (thanks Carla for the heads up), I started thinking, How can you avoid something like this?

Seek Professional Help

I highly recommend that if you are interested in brazilian bikini waxing, no short cuts allowed. Girl bits are tender, and should be treated with the utmost respect. DIY brazilian bikini waxing on the bathroom floor, or having a friend wax you in her basement is very risky. Go to a licensed professional that has received additional training in this technique.

FYI- A standard beauty school education is not good enough when it comes to this service, most schools won’t even train their estheticians to preform brazilian bikini waxing.

You Get What You Pay For

Save big at the grocery store by clipping coupons, but being frugal when it comes to bikini waxing can lead to disaster. From experience, education is what separates the good from the the bad. People that are passionate about their work will become masters of their craft, they will continue their education, and learn everything there is to know about waxing.

FYI- I am slightly against having your jack of all trades master of none stylist perform this service on you, because your safety is most important not the fact that she can “upsell” services to you.

Do Your Homework

Sites like citysearch, yelp, merchant circle, and insider pages are wonderful resources. Clients will review the business, and their reviews can be very helpful to you. Just ask, you’d be surprised how many people are brazilian waxing. You can even call the esthetician directly, and ask about her procedures. This is your body, and you have every right to make a sound decision.

FYI- Things to look for: Do they have web presence, what are other people saying about them, do they continue their education, will they stand behind their work.

There is always the possibility of injury associated with waxing, but following these steps can help reduce injury.

I recently learned of this new “thing” being offered at Script Wax Bar in San Fransisco. My prayer is that this is filed in the circular filing system, alongside inventions such as the sponge mic, and the tape measure belt.

Talk about things that make you go, yeah that’s weird. The Vajacial (a facial for your vagina) involves cleansing, exfoliating, extracting your ingrown hairs, and a mask.

As a courtesy I will take care of my clients ingrowns during waxing, but this is some next level stuff. I feel there are some things that could be done in the shower, and this is one of them. Would you get a vajacial?

We’re all adults here, right? I sure hope so!

So here’s something I’ve never admitted openly, but inquiring minds have wanted to know my stand on anal bleaching, and honestly I really don’t have one. Here is what I do know about it, the Porn Industry put it on the map, and now I have mini van driving soccer moms from all over the Metro D wondering how they can have pink cheeks, or golden brown ones (oh, knock it off!).

I don’t offer anal bleaching, and I recommend to clients that are interested in doing this, seek professional help from a certified bum whitener, aka a Plastic Surgeon. Hands down, I am rolling with the trained professional over a DIY YouTube video any day, but I live an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure life style. I don’t mess around when it comes to my safety.

Here is a Ms. Esthy Fact: the skin on the anus is hyper-pigmented (darker), and this is completely normal, it has nothing to do with personal hygiene. Anal Bleaching is often used for cosmetic purposes to lighten hyper-pigmented skin in the anal area, from the inside out. Hydroquinone Creams(carcinogen?) are used to lighten the skin, but not with out side effects. In my opinion anal bleaching is a fad, and this too shall pass.
